Winless Greater Western Sydney are up for the challenge of beating the Sydney Swans at the SCG on Sunday as they finally complete their circuit of all the major AFL venues.
Sunday’s clash with the Swans represents the Giants first visit to the SCG following three Sydney derbies at ANZ Stadium.
The second-season club has already played matches in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane Canberra, Hobart and the Gold Coast.
Co-captain Phil Davis, who will play a senior game for the first time since round five due to a back injury, said the shape of the SCG suited the Giants’ style of play.
He was adamant his club had a chance of beating the premiers.
“You always believe you are a chance to win, Davis,” told AAP.
“We’ve got plans that if we can execute we believe can get the result we want.
“You never go into a game thinking you just want to be close.
“You go in there to win. We want to have a successful side and we’ll go into the Sydney game expecting a very good performance and trying to get a victory.
“We definitely want to challenge them in the areas that they are very good at “
Sydney beat the Giants by 63 and 94 points last season and by 30 in round one this year.
“I think the key is to start well,” Swans forwards coach Henry Playfair told AAP.
“They obviously bring a lot of enthusiasm some weeks and you are hoping you can get on top of that and try and control the game early on your terms.
“If its out of control they are going to be hard to rein in because they are enthusiastic and they can run.”
Playfair is a huge admirer of the Giants’ Jeremy Cameron, describing him as one of the best young forwards he has ever seen.
Sydney have brought Jesse White back into their team for injured forward Sam Reid.
Playfair was confident Sydney still had plenty of goalkicking options despite injuries to Reid and Adam Goodes.
“We feel with (Kurt Tippett) down there and a resting ruckman that we do have some height, so we certainly feel like we’re not lacking in that area,”, Playfair said.
“Last year we,had nine players kick over 20 goals and this year it’s tracking similar.”
Midfielder Jono O’Rourke, the No.2 pick in the 2012 draft, will make his senior debut for the Giants.
