Giants insist star forward is fit

Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron insists battling star forward Jeremy Cameron is fit and hopes he can produce a strong finish to a stop-start AFL campaign.

The 2013 All Australian full-forward leads the Giants’ list with 25 goals from 11 games, but hasn’t had the impact or productivity he enjoyed in his breakout second season.

Last year Cameron kicked 62 goals, just six behind Coleman Medallist Jarryd Roughead and won his club best and fairest award.

He had bags of six and seven, but hasn’t managed more than four in a game this season.

Well policed by savvy Swans defender Ted Richards, 21-year-old Cameron had little impact on Saturday’s Sydney derby, kicking two second-half goals in the 46-point loss.

He has missed three of the last seven games with suspension and one-week injury issues.

Cameron also struggled for fitness early in the campaign after an ankle problem in the pre-season.

“He’s fine fitness-wise,” Leon Cameron said of his namesake.

“Jeremy has had an injury-interrupted season. He’s got going for a couple of weeks, then misses.

“That’s probably happened the last five weeks, but then the first six or seven weeks of the season he just couldn’t train much because he was recovering from injury.

“He knows as well where he’s got to get better at and I just hope the next eight weeks he can actually have a really good run of training every week and playing every week.”

Concussed defender Heath Shaw was released from hospital after he was kneed in the head by Sydney forward Kurt Tippett.

Shaw will be monitored at training during the week, but suffered no other damage as he ran back with the flight of the ball.

The Giants coach couldn’t guarantee midfielder Toby Greene would be back in the senior side for Saturday’s home clash with Adelaide, despite starring in his first match back from a club imposed five-game suspension.

He tallied 40 touches and was the best player in the Giants’ reserves NEAFL win over Sydney.
