Giants CEO slams uncompetitive team

Greater Western Sydney Giants chief executive David Matthews has taken the extraordinary step of writing an open letter to the club’s fans, saying they should not have to put up with thumpings any longer.

The Giants were at their uncompetitive worst against Richmond, a game that fans and bookmakers suggested they might win.

Richmond triumphed by 113 points, with Jack Riewoldt’s 11-goal bag outscoring the young side on his own.

AFL great Leigh Matthews said he had “never seen a worse example of defending”, suggesting the Giants had regressed to their debut season.

While beltings and the Giants come hand-in-hand, clearly this one hit a nerve with Matthews, who said fans deserved better.

“We know we have a young developing side that will have its ups and downs,” he wrote.

“But you should not have to accept uncompetitive performances.

“We have 13 games to go this year including six in Sydney and one in Canberra.”

“We are determined to repay the faith you have shown in the Giants.”

Just 8,331 people were at Spotless Stadium for the Giants’ abysmal showing, which may not be the worst defeat they suffer this year.

They face Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday, who have already belted St Kilda by 145 points and Gold Coast by 99 points this season.

Perhaps the most staggering part of GWS’ third year in the AFL is their round one win over Sydney.

Matthews alluded to the idea that win had lifted expectations significantly on the club, coached by Leon Cameron.

“We believe we are making progress as our wins against the Swans and Melbourne earlier this season showed,” Matthews said.

“But our last two matches highlight that we still have a lot of work to do to bridge the gap between our best and worst.”
