Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe escaped injury despite copping a knock to his troublesome left shoulder during the Dockers’ 109-point AFL pre-season cup triumph over the Western Bulldogs in Mandurah on Saturday.
Fyfe sent a huge scare through Fremantle’s camp when he left the field in the third quarter of the practice match nursing his reconstructed shoulder.
But the 21-year-old allayed any fears by returning to the field in the final quarter, finishing the match with 30 possessions in a promising display.
Fremantle lost to Carlton by 70 points last week, but were a far more clinical outfit to run out 23.8 (146) to 5.7 (37)
The Dogs entered the match minus a host of their best players, with the likes of Robert Murphy, Daniel Giansiracusa, Ryan Griffen, Matthew Boyd, Will Minson, Shaun Higgins, Dale Morris and Daniel Cross all missing.
In contrast, Fremantle chose a near full-strength side, and the gulf in experience between the two sides was obvious as the Dockers opened up a 52-point lead by halftime.
One bright spot for the Bulldogs was the display of former Eagle Koby Stevens, who looked at home in the midfield on the way to 23 possessions.
Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich, playing his first match since undergoing surgery on his hip, Achilles and back during the off-season, looked ready to tear the game apart after booting 2.2 in the opening quarter.
But he was kept quiet by Jordan Roughead thereafter, kicking just one more goal.
Fellow Dockers forward Chris Mayne snared two spectacular marks and booted three goals, while Michael Walters (four goals) and Matt de Boer (three) were also prominent up forward.
