The Dockers might be the official dark horse heading into the second half of the season, but are they a genuine finals chance?

Four wins on the trot has Fremantle sitting just outside the eight at 6-5, but there’s still plenty left to learn about Justin Longmuir’s side heading into a tricky stretch of schedule.

The Dockers were the benefactor of some sloppy kicking against Melbourne two weeks ago, a game they probably deserved to lose when you look back at the clearance, contested possession, and turnover numbers.

A handy 29-point win over the Cats a week earlier was no fluke, but given their other two wins were against Hawthorn and Sydney, it’s tough to read too much into Freo’s recent form.

That said, the Dockers remain one of the best teams around the ruck, while their tackling pressure has also gone up immensely in recent weeks.

Most importantly, Freo is finally scoring points, which does pose a serious challenge for a Tigers outfit that has been hot and cold from inside 50 throughout the year.

Last week’s six-point win over GWS was a deserving reward for interim coach Andrew McQualter, but this is a different kettle of fish against a Fremantle side that sets up so well behind the ball and continues to improve.

Interestingly, neither side has been able to put together consistent quarters of footy this year, which does make this a tough game to bet on.

Richmond typically starts strong and fades, while the Dockers have been a firm second-half team.

With that in mind, Freo’s home-field advantage should prove too tough to overcome in the end.
