For Greater Western Sydney, September starts now.
While some AFL teams begin putting their cues in the rack and booking players in for surgery as finals hopes are extinguished, GWS are desperate to bank more premiership points.
Having recorded their first win of the season last Saturday, GWS ruckman Dean Brogan says it’s vital his teammates maintain the same standard in their final four matches of 2013.
“This time last year we had a win against Port Adelaide, but after that we had some bad losses,” Brogan said.
“It’s really important we finish off the year as strong as possible … it’s exactly what we’ve spoken about.”
The Giants will also be just as ruthless at the selection table.
In their maiden campaign, coach Kevin Sheedy shared the games around in an effort to get a good look at his list.
“This time last year we were sort of giving games away, we’re not going to be doing that at all now,” said Brogan, whose return from a back injury has coincided with the win over Melbourne and honest losses to Essendon and Collingwood.
“We’ve said as a club and a coaching staff, we really need to finish off this month as best as we can.
“The best thing about the last three weeks is we haven’t had a lot of changes. Our back six is pretty settled, our midfield is doing well together and our forwards are working.
“We’re starting to get some flow, we want to keep that going so there won’t be six changes unless we have to.
“We want to head into the pre-season with a bit of up and go. It’s a big month for us.”
Ruckman Andrew Phillips and midfielder Jacob Townsend will undergo hip surgery this week, but those with minor niggles will have to wait until the end of the season for relief.
GWS face Fremantle in Perth on Sunday, then Brisbane, Richmond and Gold Coast.
Brogan could be rested from the Dockers clash to ensure his troublesome back injury doesn’t flare up again before September.
“That’s something we’ll talk about because we’ve got a real tough couple of weeks coming up,” he said.
Another victory could put the Giants in danger of relinquishing the wooden spoon and attached No.1 draft pick, a powerful piece of trade bait in their search for a marquee recruit.
