Franklin hopes his best AFL is yet to come

AFL clubs, consider yourself warned: Lance Franklin is only just getting warmed up.

The Sydney superstar is hoping his best is yet to come after matching his previous season-high five goals against Port Adelaide on Saturday.

Feeding off the Swans’ biggest SCG crowd since 1997, Franklin’s run of majors in the second half proved a game changer.

Three sensational final-quarter kicks, including a long-range ‘Hail Mary’ from 60m out, helped quell a fast-finishing Power and hand his side their eighth successive win.

“I wouldn’t be able to get those goals without the midfielders winning the ball and our halfbacks running and providing options for us,” a humble Franklin said.

“I was just happy to get the win against a quality outfit in Port Adelaide.”

But, much like last month’s clash with his former club Hawthorn, it didn’t start all that smoothly for the $10 million recruit.

Franklin went almost an hour-and-a-half without a goal, kicking just four behinds before the main break.

“It would’ve been nice to kick four in the first half, but my work rate was up in the second and I was lucky enough to kick a couple of goals – which was good for myself,” he added.

The 27-year-old was proud of Saturday’s effort, which he said was the culmination of weeks of hard work and more time spent with his new teammates following his early-season injury woes.

“I think I’ve probably played better football in the last couple of weeks because I’ve been able to get on the track and get the consistency in my training and my playing,” said Franklin.

“I’m still trying to get to know my teammates a lot better …

“I hope my best is still to come.

“I think it’s going to come when I play (more) games.

“There’s still a lot of the season to go and a lot of the finals to go, too.

“So I look forward to the back half of the season.”
