Fit Fyfe ready to topple AFL’s Crows

Fremantle star Nat Fyfe will be keeping his luggage well out of the way as he prepares to tackle Adelaide’s midfield in Friday night’s AFL semi-final clash at AAMI Stadium.

Fyfe missed the Dockers’ clash with the Crows in round 20 after rolling his ankle tripping on his suitcase while playing around with a ball in his hotel room on the morning on the match.

In the absence of Fyfe and injured ruckman Aaron Sandilands, Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield ran riot with 34 possessions and two goals to inspire the Crows to a 28-point win.

Fyfe promised to be more careful in his hotel room this time around, but was more concerned about halting the influence of Dangerfield, Scott Thompson, Bernie Vince, Nathan van Berlo and company in the crucial midfield battle.

“They were really dangerous last time. They dominated us in the clearances so it’s something we’ll definitely look at this week and try and get on top of,” Fyfe said on Tuesday.

“They’re really potent. They use their legs really well and drive out of stoppages.

“Hopefully with Aaron, David (Mundy), myself and Stephen Hill, we’ll be able to get on top in that area.”

Dangerfield looms as the biggest threat to Fremantle.

Dockers tagger Ryan Crowley, who successfully shut down Thompson in round 20, isn’t ideally suited to Dangerfield, whose explosive speed and powerful strength would be hard for any run-with player to stop.

“He’s just such a strong player,” Fyfe said of the 22-year-old.

“He picks the ball up and starts running and makes something happen every time.

“A lot of the time when you think the ball’s dead, he’s able to create something out of nothing.

“We’re aware of that and will try to stop that this week.”

Fremantle flew under the radar before last week’s stunning upset of defending premiers Geelong at the MCG, and Adelaide are preparing for the Dockers to launch a similarly frenetic assault on Friday night.

Fyfe said he and his team-mates were full of confidence under the astute guidance of coach Ross Lyon.

“We’re really confident in the direction he’s taking us and the game plan,” Fyfe said.

“Internally we’ve got a strong belief and the saying is, ‘We play anyone, anywhere, anytime’, and we’ll take that same ethos to Adelaide this week regardless of what external opinion is.”

The Crows will be without injured defender Daniel Talia, who restricted Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich to just two goals when the teams last met.
