Favourites AFL tag a new pressure: Lions

Being asked to honour 126 years of AFL club history with a win was daunting enough.

But Josh Drummond reckons the Brisbane Lions face another tough assignment on Sunday – wearing the “favourites” tag.

The Lions are still buzzing after making their club greats proud by thrashing the Western Bulldogs before celebrating at their first Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Melbourne on Saturday night.

The function had inductees spanning the club’s entire 126-year, Fitzroy-Bears-Lions history.

However, Drummond said the Lions would need to lift again despite taking on lowly Melbourne at the Gabba this weekend thanks to a “different sort of pressure”.

“Last weekend, we built it up as a big one for the club and the boys handled that well,” he said.

“But this week, we will have the favourites tag which we haven’t had for a few weeks now – that is something we will have to embrace.”

The Lions’ first win over the Bulldogs in Melbourne in nine years ensured the inaugural Hall of Fame night marked the club’s biggest party – but Drummond was confident there would be no hangover.

“It was important that we went down there and did the jumper proud,” Drummond said.

“You could see how much it meant to guys like (Lions great) Kevin Murray who had done just about everything in football.

“But we have to back that up and show it is not just something we do when we get challenged.”

Drummond believed the night had inspired their young brigade to help turn the season around for the Lions (13th; 5-7 record).

“For the young guys, it was a real eye opener,” he said.

“You probably get sheltered from that up here.

“For them to experience that after a good win, I hope it gives them a real boost – we have to play with that passion again this weekend.”

Drummond said the potential loss of defender Matt Maguire (elbow) would counter Melbourne losing key forward and ex-Brisbane teammate Mitch Clark (foot) for the season.
