Farcial Etihad scenes raise roof row

Geelong coach Chris Scott and his North Melbourne counterpart Brad Scott have called for the Etihad Stadium retractable roof to be shut for all AFL games regardless of weather after the farce of their match being played in heavy rain with the roof left open.

The stadium’s greatest asset wasn’t used for Sunday’s match despite an hour of threatening cloud, weather radar predictions the heavens would open, then heavy rain during the second half.

Both coaches admitted the rain had no impact on the result – a four-point win to the Cats.

But the ridiculous look provided by rain pouring into a stadium designed to resist the elements baffled the coaches post-match.

“We’ve got an amazing stadium that’s a fantastic place to play and watch footy. The roof just should be closed all the time,” Chris Scott said.

“When the sun’s shining the players can’t see. Close the roof. And when it does rain, you’ll be covered.”

Brad Scott said the situation was “laughable”.

“It’s embarrassing for the competition when it’s raining at an indoor stadium,” he said.

“I just do not understand why we don’t close the roof, and I asked the ground manager after the game and he said ‘we looked at the forecast, and it said it wasn’t going to rain’.

“Close it. Just close it. It’s not that hard.
