Essendon and Carlton will close their disappointing campaigns with a Thursday night clash at the MCG, as both sides look to salvage pride and momentum for 2026. The Bombers came within a kick of breaking their 11-game losing streak last week, only to fall 77-75 to St Kilda after Mason Redman’s long-range effort drifted wide in the dying seconds. Brad Scott’s youthful outfit will be desperate to turn competitive efforts into a long-awaited win.

Carlton, by contrast, produced one of its best displays of the year in a 118-64 dismantling of Port Adelaide, driven by Harry McKay’s dominant seven-goal, 21-disposal outing. The victory lifted the Blues to 12th and opened the door for a small ladder climb. Historically, the Blues have had the edge in this rivalry, winning five of the last six meetings — including a tight 78-70 result on King’s Birthday Eve earlier this season.
