Essendon are likely to be stripped of all their 2013 premiership points on Monday as the AFL Commission meets to determine what sanctions the Bombers will receive for their controversial supplements program.
The commission meeting began at 8.30am (AEST) at AFL House.
The Bombers are expected to be docked all of the competition points they have accrued this season, ruling them out of the final series and making Saturday night’s round-23 clash against Richmond a dead rubber.
The AFL could also suspend Essendon coach James Hird for one year, dock the club draft picks and slap the Bombers with a massive fine.
Hird had been understood to be unwilling to accept a ban of longer than six months.
Essendon and Hird concede they face punishment, but the main sticking point has been an unwillingness to accept any suggestion they are drug cheats.
The Bombers have been under investigation by the Australian Sport Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) and the AFL since early February over the club’s 2011-12 supplements program.
The ASADA investigation is ongoing and earlier this month they provided the AFL with a 400-page interim report.
Acting on that report, the AFL charged Essendon, Hird, club doctor Bruce Reid, Bombers football manager Danny Corcoran and senior assistant coach Mark Thompson with offences relating to conduct unbecoming and bringing the game into disrepute.
Hird has filed a separate Supreme Court writ against the AFL that remains alive.
