Essendon Bombers vs Geelong Cats Preview

The Scott brothers square off on Sunday in what should be a telling encounter.

A win should be enough to see the Cats back into the top eight when it’s all said and done, but they won’t find this easy against a Bombers outfit looking to build on a heartbreaking ANZAC Day loss to the Pies.

Essendon was arguably the better team on the day, booting three goals clear in the third term but failing to go on with the job when it mattered most.

It was a crushing loss for a club that looks destined to play finals now, but to put a positive spin on things, it’s also a handy learning curve for a young team on the rise.

The Cats have come good with three wins in a row, the most impressive being last week’s 93-point belting over Sydney in what was more of a Grand Final replay than a rematch.

Geelong has appeared much more methodical when it comes to ball movement and getting the ball inside 50, but with two of those wins coming over Hawthorn and West Coast, there’s still a bit left to prove.

The Cats have made life difficult for the Dons winning their last four encounters dating back to 2019, but I still have genuine queries around their ruck with Mark Blicavs filling in last week – albeit to outstanding results.

Like last week, the Dons are enticing two-goal underdogs, but I feel more comfortable backing a high-scoring game.

Jeremy Cameron is on fire to start the season, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to learn the Cats lead the league in points scored.

The Bombers, meanwhile, rank top five themselves with Jake Stringer in terrific form, not to mention the fact the last three meetings between these two sides have all gone Over the Total.
