Preview:

The Bombers are eighth, the Dockers are coming off successive 104-point losses. Simple, right? But this is the same Essendon that lost to Brisbane last month and nearly blew their finals hopes a fortnight ago against Carlton. Dockers coach Ross Lyon will have something planned for Sunday and it’s a question of whether the Bombers are switched on. If they blow this, they deserve to drop out of the top eight.

Key: Without injured goalsneaks Orazio Fantasia and Josh Green, Essendon’s forward line is having a pre-finals makeover. Essendon have not kicked 100-plus points in a month and they need to score consistently to keep Fremantle at arm’s length.

AFL News:

The AFL ladder may suggest otherwise but Brisbane Lions skipper Dayne Beams wishes the season would never end.

The Lions will complete another disappointing year when they host North Melbourne on Saturday in a regular-season finale that will decide the wooden spoon.

Beams admitted in the past the Lions would have not been skipping to work in similar circumstances.

But the Brisbane captain said the team couldn’t be happier after a late season revival and were sad to see it come to an end this weekend.

“A lot of the guys don’t want the season to finish and I don’t think you could say the same about previous years,” Beams said.

“It is a nice place to turn up.

“It’s definitely been an enjoyable place to come to work this year, put it that way.”

Brisbane are on five wins with North Melbourne but could move up to 15th place with another victory.

Beams believed the Lions did not deserve the wooden spoon after launching a 4-7 run since their round 11 bye.

“I think our fans and the broader footy world are seeing that we are heading down the right track,” he said.

“Certainly the commentary around us has changed, not that is the be-all and end-all.

“But that’s obviously the perception we are creating.

“We are in a different position to where we were last year.

“It would be nice to finish the season strongly and leave a sweet taste in our mouths going out.”

The Lions have finished second last the previous two seasons and last featured in finals in 2009.
