West Coast haven’t given up hope of hosting a preliminary final in Perth this year, but they’ll need a whole deck of cards to fall their way for them to get their wish.

With teams required to serve a seven-day hard quarantine on arrival to Perth before playing matches, the AFL deemed it too difficult to grant West Coast hosting rights beyond week one of the finals.

It means if West Coast earn hosting rights to a semi-final or a preliminary final, they would have to play it in Queensland or Adelaide.

But Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett says the club is still trying to come up with a compromise that will allow West Coast to play all their home finals in Perth.

“They (the WA government) did offer up a couple of solutions to the AFL that weren’t acceptable, but we still think we can work with the government if we earn a home final to get a team over and get them out after the appropriate tests and quarantine,” Nisbett told Perth radio station 94.5 before the team’s loss to the Bulldogs on Sunday.

“Hopefully the state medical officers and the police commissioner can have a look at the opportunities that we’ve got and the Premier can tick it off.

“We will keep working and keep trying.

“The environment up here (in Queensland) tells us it can be done. The players are very isolated, the staff are as well. So there is opportunity I think to be able to do it.”

West Coast’s attempts to host anything beyond week one of the finals will become a moot point if the Eagles don’t secure a top-four berth.

Sunday’s two-point loss to the Bulldogs means fifth-placed West Coast will probably need to beat St Kilda and North Melbourne in the final two rounds to have any chance of jumping back into the top four.

Meanwhile, Nisbett expects to learn of a hearing date for Willie Rioli’s ASADA trial once the season is over.

Rioli faces a maximum four-year ban for allegedly tampering with a urine sample last year.

The 25-year-old has been provisionally suspended since last September, and the Eagles are frustrated that they are still in the dark over when his hearing will be.

“He’ll obviously get a penalty of some description,” Nisbett said.

“We’re not sure of length and time and all of those things. We are hoping as soon as the season is over we’ll have a date that Willie can go to a hearing.

“It’s really disappointing it’s taken so long, it’s just not fair in our opinion, but that’s the process apparently.”
