Eagles skipper tips families for AFL hubs

West Coast captain Luke Shuey expects players’ families to be allowed to enter Queensland hubs with teams when the AFL season resumes next month.

Western Australia’s tight border controls mean both the Eagles and Fremantle will restart the season – which could recommence as early as June 11 – in temporary bases on the Gold Coast.

They will likely be there until WA’s state government relaxes its quarantine protocols.

Adelaide and Port Adelaide face a similar situation because of South Australia’s reluctance to grant the two clubs permission to fly in and out of the state for matches.

Players being kept away from their families for long periods of time was a major sticking point when the AFL put a ‘worst-case’ hub scenario to the AFL Players Association last month.

But a deal between the AFL and AFLPA is now set to see immediate families allowed into the temporary hub set-up that will be announced by the league on Friday.

“It’s been discussed in terms of that’s what we want, and that’s what clubs are going to push for,” father-of-one Shuey told Fox Footy on Thursday night.

“I think the AFL will probably come to the party on that.

“I don’t see why not. The AFL have been reasonable throughout the whole process.

“So if we have to go away, I think that’s looking likely, which is a good thing.”

Despite the temporary relocation presenting another hurdle to West Coast in their premiership hunt, Shuey said the Eagles were prepared to do what they had to for the sake of the competition.

“As a playing group, we owe a lot to the game,” he said.

“No one is bigger than the game and this is our opportunity to give back to the game and get it back on its feet and get the competition going again.”
