Eagles, Lions to host Easter AFL fixtures

Reigning AFL premiers West Coast will square off against Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium next year as part of a Good Friday doubleheader.

The AFL has added a second marquee match for the public holiday on April 19 to follow the third annual clash in Melbourne.

There are reports Essendon is set to replace St Kilda as North Melbourne’s opposition for the earlier game at Marvel Stadium.

Port Adelaide confirmed it would travel to Perth for the new fixture despite the AFL delaying the release of the full 2019 regular season draw until Thursday.

After suffering shattering losses to the Eagles in round 21 and the 2017 elimination final, Port are keen to reverse their fortunes against the premiers.

“The rivalry now between the clubs is enormous, especially after the two classic games we have played in recent times,” Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas said.

“Fair to say we hope we are on the winning side this time around.”

Brisbane will set the scene for the round after the revival of Easter Thursday football at the Gabba.

The Lions, who showed improvement in a five-win season under coach Chris Fagan, will reprise their role as Easter Thursday hosts when Collingwood travel for the prime-time clash on April 18.

Brisbane played Easter Thursday matches on and off for almost a decade between 2003 and 2012 before the semi-regular fixture was shelved due to a cricket scheduling conflict at the Gabba.

“Traditionally the Easter Thursday games were our biggest for the year,” Lions CEO Greg Swann said.

“We believe the AFL has recognised we play an exciting brand of footy, which has been justly rewarded by this fixture.”
