In what could be his final AFL campaign, West Coast skipper Darren Glass says there’s no reason why the Eagles can’t win the premiership this year.
West Coast were the fairytale story of 2011, going from wooden spooners to preliminary finalists within 12 months.
And with the Eagles’ talented fleet of youngsters expected to improve even more this season, Glass said a premiership wasn’t out of the question.
“I think we’re capable of it this year,” Glass said on Tuesday.
“We’ve had our coaching group together for a few years as well. That adds some stability.
“The player group obviously had some success last year, and we’re starting to play good footy together.
“I think (Luke) Shuey’s looking in great shape. I think he’s set for a big year.
“We’ve got quite a few guys coming into the peak of their careers like Josh Kennedy, Mark LeCras, so I think there’s improvement through quite a bit of the list.”
Glass, in his 13th pre-season campaign, said it was a distinct possibility that 2012 could be his last year in the AFL.
“I’m not too sure,” the 220-game veteran said.
“I’ll wait and see how I play during the year and how the team’s shaping up.
“I’ve always enjoyed my footy – I love it. But certainly, I’m soaking it all in and appreciating it this time around. It could be my last year.”
Perth is set to swelter through a number of 40C-plus days over the next week, but Glass doubted any of West Coast’s pre-season sessions would be cancelled.
“I’ve never seen that happen before and I don’t think I’ll see that happen,” Glass said.
West Coast players dabbled in some baseball skills on Tuesday after making a visit to Perth Heat’s headquarters.
The Heat will be aiming to book their passage into the Australian Baseball League grand final when they take on the Melbourne Aces in a five-game major semi-final series, starting on Thursday.
