Eagles can still win AFL flag: Worsfold

West Coast coach John Worsfold believes the Eagles can still win the AFL premiership despite four losses in five games to open their season.

Worsfold said with the likes of Matt Rosa and Sharrod Wellingham available for selection, the Eagles could recover from their shock five-point loss to Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

West Coast led by 41 points midway through the third quarter but collapsed, conceding eight of the last nine goals as Port remained undefeated.

But Worsfold said the season wasn’t slipping away despite his club’s 1-4 win-loss record.

“We have still got a lot of footy ahead – that doesn’t change,” he said.

“The premiership teams come from the top four the majority of times. If we don’t make it (top four), this might be one of the rare years where maybe it doesn’t.”

“Our focus is on improving our footy, not how far we’ve got to go in the season and how many wins its going to take for us to finish in certain spots. The rest of it is irrelevant otherwise.

“Anything is possible. We can play better footy, I’ve got no doubt about that, and that is coming, that is the exciting part for us to look forward to.”

Worsfold challenged his players to get mentally tougher when kicking at goal, their 10.19 against Port following 7.23 in the previous week’s loss to Carlton.

“Our boys have been bad with our shots at goal for a couple of weeks but they haven’t been bad the weeks prior or last year,” he said.

“There is something going on. They’re feeling the pressure, coughing it up.

“They have got to kick the goals – it’s their job. We expect them to kick them.”
