Eagle Waters faces nervous injury wait

As West Coast defender Beau Waters nervously awaits the results of scans on his mystery foot injury, midfielder Matt Rosa is preparing to launch a brave bid to play in Saturday night’s AFL semi-final against Collingwood at the MCG.

Waters, who injured his right foot in Sunday’s 96-point elimination final win over North Melbourne, will find out on Monday whether he will be able to play again this year.

West Coast have a medical meeting at 2pm local time (1600 AEST), in which they’ll discuss the results of Waters’ scans and the best option to treat the injury.

But while it’s looking bleak for Waters to feature again during the finals, the news is looking better for Rosa, who fractured his collarbone in the round 22 win over Collingwood and was initially expected to miss up to five weeks.

Rosa had a plate inserted in his right collarbone in a bid to add extra strength to the area, and has since resumed light contact drills.

Worsfold said the 25-year-old was “every chance” to feature against the Magpies, but would be put through more vigorous contact drills before being given the green light.

“He’s done a little bit (of contact work),” Worsfold said.

“Not full on, but he did join in match practice the other day with us so he was susceptible to any tackles or bumps.

“If he thinks he’s ready to go, then I will heed a lot out of that, because I don’t know how his arm feels.

“But he’s been running no worries for a week or so, doing weights – full strength weights – so his arm’s strong and feeling good.”

Despite Rosa’s rapid improvement, he still faces an uphill battle to make it back in time for the semi-final.

A return against Sydney in the preliminary final the week after – if West Coast makes it that far – appears a more likely scenario for Rosa.
