Eagle Shuey escapes serious injury

West Coast coach John Worsfold is confident star midfielder Luke Shuey will be fit to take on Collingwood next week, but in-form defender Will Schofield is set for a stint on the AFL sidelines due to a hamstring injury.

Shuey was left heavily winded and nursing bruised ribs after copping a knee to the side from Carlton ruckman Robbie Warnock in the dying minutes of Thursday night’s 10-point win in Perth.

The 22-year-old hobbled from the field in obvious discomfort, but Worsfold described the hit as nothing more than a “stinger” and said Shuey should be right for the June 23 blockbuster against Collingwood at the MCG.

However, the news isn’t as good for Schofield, who will undergo scans on the hamstring he injured in the final quarter.

“There’s not too much doubt that he’s strained his hamstring. It’s a matter of what extent,” Worsfold said.

“Scans give you some idea, but then clinically it depends on what he can do on the Monday-Wednesday. Post the Collingwood game we’ll see where he’s at.”

Fellow defender Beau Waters will come back into the team after serving his one-match suspension, while Sam Butler is a chance to take on the ‘Pies if he can recover from lingering hamstring tightness.

West Coast lost twice to Collingwood at the MCG last year, but pushed the grand finalists all the way in a pulsating qualifying final.

Worsfold played down the significance of next week’s re-match, but said the game would be a good challenge to his fledgling group.

“Collingwood are obviously still one of the top sides going around, so it’s a challenge we look forward to,” Worsfold said.

West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui, midfielder Matt Priddis and tagger Scott Selwood starred against the Blues, but it was the Eagles’ one-percenters which left Worsfold a happy man.

Forward Jack Darling left a particularly good impression on the premiership coach when he ran all the way from half-forward to lay a tackle on Blues youngster Matthew Watson, who was preparing to unleash on goal.

Darling also booted two crucial goals in the final quarter to swing the match back West Coast’s way.

“He’s an outstanding young player with improvement to come,” Worsfold said after the 10.19 (79) to 10.9 (69) triumph, which lifted the Eagles back to the top of the table.
