Eagle Selwood to hold off on surgery

West Coast midfielder Scott Selwood requires surgery on his injured ankle – but the Eagles are hopeful any procedure can be delayed until after the AFL season.

Selwood has been carrying a sore ankle since round three, and missed last week’s win over Gold Coast after struggling to train in the lead-up to the game.

The Eagles have opted against sending in Selwood for immediate surgery, and will instead take a wait-and-see approach with the injury in the hope they can squeeze some games out of him.

“We’re still making decisions on Scott,” Eagles coach Adam Simpson told Perth radio station 6PR.

“He’s going to need a clean-out at some stage. We’re just trying to figure out when the best time is.

“We’re quite depleted in some areas in our mids, so we’re still assessing that.”

West Coast midfielder Elliot Yeo will undergo surgery on his broken hand later this week, ruling him out for between five to seven weeks.

But Simpson said Luke Shuey (ankle) is ready to return for Sunday’s clash with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

Ruckman Dean Cox should also be available after being rested last week following his heavy workload over the first 11 games of the year.

The Eagles sit two games adrift of the top eight, but will start favourites against a St Kilda outfit that has slumped to last spot following seven straight defeats.
