Scans have cleared West Coast forward Josh Kennedy of any serious damage to his injured ankle, but the 25-year-old still needs to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday’s elimination final against North Melbourne.
Kennedy’s surgically-repaired left ankle twisted awkwardly while he attempted to soccer a ball in last Friday’s 25-point loss to Hawthorn.
Scans showed no major damage and Eagles coach John Worsfold is confident his star spearhead will be fit to welcome the Kangaroos.
“It’s going to be about just how he feels,” Worsfold said on Monday.
“He obviously tweaked his ankle a bit but went back on the field and I expect that he’ll be right to go.
“He told me he had (the scans) done and was feeling really confident.
“He does a rehab training program with a view to train with us on Thursday – the main session.
“That’s the one where we’ll assess him on how he’s going.”
Kennedy has booted just one goal since returning from his initial ankle injury a fortnight ago, but Worsfold said the former Blue’s mere presence had been important for the team.
“He’s presenting up pretty well,” Worsfold said.
“We’ve seen him competing against three defenders, bringing the ball to ground and other guys kick goals.
“Not many people would put that down to Josh’s effort but we certainly do.
“So that’s what he brings. He draws defenders to him to try and spoil, which gives all our other players more opportunity.”
The Eagles will be boosted by the return of defender Eric Mackenzie from a minor hamstring complaint.
Mackenzie’s inclusion is a vital one for West Coast as they attempt to quell North Melbourne spearheads Drew Petrie, Lachlan Hansen and Robbie Tarrant.
North midfielder Daniel Wells is set to return from a calf injury.
