Eagle bullies want top-end AFL scalp

After smashing the living daylights out of GWS, West Coast want to prove they are more than just flat-track bullies.

The Eagles moved into seventh spot on the AFL table following Sunday’s 111-point win over the struggling Giants.

The 30.8 (188) to 12.5 (77) romp was just four points shy of West Coast’s biggest win, and it was also the first time in the club’s 28-year history they kicked 30 goals in a match.

Forward Josh Kennedy was the hero with 11 goals, but goalsneak Mark LeCras is facing suspension for his head-high bump on Will Hoskin-Elliott.

When West Coast have won this season, it’s generally been by big amounts.

The Bulldogs (65 points), Demons (93) and Giants (111) have all copped pastings from the Eagles.

However, when West Coast have faced a genuine finals contender, they’ve fallen short.

Fremantle, Port Adelaide and Geelong have all had their measure, while West Coast threw away a match-winning lead against the struggling Blues.

The Eagles will have the chance to turn that trend around when they take on Collingwood (MCG), North Melbourne (home) and Hawthorn (Aurora Stadium) after this week’s bye.

West Coast coach Adam Simpson said it was important for his side to beat an AFL heavyweight.

“We do need a big scalp to have any standing in the competition,” Simpson said.

“We’re 4-4, we’re in the middle.

“So you’d think the next three games will probably determine how well we’ll go towards the end of the year.

“We’re still educating the players and they’re still learning how I operate as well. Every week we seem to find another little level to go to in terms of our training and preparation.”

West Coast have been hurt by injuries to key players this season, with LeCras, Shannon Hurn, Beau Waters and Xavier Ellis all missing sizeable chunks.
