‘Dons doctor keeps fighting AFL charges

Veteran Essendon club doctor Bruce Reid returns to the AFL on Thursday determined to clear his name.

Reid’s charges represent the last unresolved part of the AFL case against the Bombers.

The league announced unprecedented penalties for Essendon on Tuesday night over the club’s supplements scandal.

Coach James Hird also is banned for 12 months, senior assistant coach Mark Thompson was fined $30,000 and club football manager Danny Corcoran is suspended for four months.

Reid’s case is complicated by his job as a GP and he will return to AFL House on Thursday morning.

On Sunday, Essendon great Matthew Lloyd speculated that Reid would leave his part-time role at the club to concentrate on defending his reputation.

The charges relate to conduct unbecoming and bringing the game into disrepute.

A letter from Reid to Hird and then-football manager Paul Hamilton early last year, where the doctor expresses concerns about the club’s supplements program, was used as evidence in the AFL’s case against Essendon.

Reid has been Essendon’s club doctor for more than 30 years.
