Fremantle midfielder David Mundy is set to reach the magical 300-game mark after signing a one-year contract extension, but the AFL future of veteran ruckman Aaron Sandilands remains up in the air.
Mundy has been one of Fremantle’s best players this season, averaging 23 disposals a game to go with 17 goals.
The 292-game veteran is set to become just the second Docker to reach the 300-game mark, with Matthew Pavlich (353 games) the only other.
Veteran goalsneak Hayden Ballantyne and injury-plagued midfielder Harley Bennell are also set to earn new one-year deals.
But it remains to be seen if Sandilands plays on in 2019.
Even if the 35-year-old does continue, it could be at a rival club, with West Coast reportedly sounding out the veteran in case restricted free agent Scott Lycett leaves.
The Eagles could be without Nic Naitanui (knee) for all of next season, while Lycett is being heavily pursued by Port Adelaide and St Kilda.
Sandilands hasn’t played since round 13 because of calf issues, and he managed just 10 games last year, and five games in 2016.
But when fit, Sandilands is one of the best ruckmen in the competition.
Fremantle are in the middle of their four-year rebuild, and Mundy is keen to help the club’s younger players develop.
“It’s been a challenging couple of years but I think we’ve seen another step forward in our progression, said Mundy, who is on the verge of completing a marine science degree at university.
“To see some of the young guys coming on this year has been really exciting.
“I’ve found it great. I’ve enjoyed my role in that and, hopefully, those guys have got something out of it and find it beneficial as well.”
Fremantle also re-signed tagger Bailey Banfield, defender Taylin Duman, and forward Hugh Dixon earlier this week.
The Dockers take on Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
