Dockers cool on Morabito’s AFL return

Fremantle forward Hayden Ballantyne is set to play against Geelong on Saturday night despite undergoing surgery on a fractured jaw, but wingman Anthony Morabito will have to wait at least another fortnight before making his AFL return.

Ballantyne underwent surgery on Tuesday after copping a heavy hit to the face in last week’s loss to Port Adelaide.

The 26-year-old joined his teammates at training on Thursday, with coach Ross Lyon confident Ballantyne would be passed fit to play.

But Morabito won’t be named for his AFL return just yet, Lyon keen for the luckless wingman to build more match fitness in the WAFL.

Morabito, who has undergone three knee reconstructions since last playing for Fremantle in 2010, has been in solid form in the WAFL this season.

The Dockers have a bye next week, meaning the 22-year-old’s earliest return will be against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on June 1.

Key defender Luke McPharlin will miss another week with a quad injury, but Zac Dawson is expected to return from an ankle complaint.

Lyon said he also expected midfielder Stephen Hill (calf) to play.

Fremantle (4-4) are in desperate need of a win to get their season back on track, with Matthew Pavlich’s 300-game milestone serving as extra motivation.
