Docker Pearce proud to reach 200 AFL games

Fremantle midfielder Danyle Pearce didn’t expect much when he first embarked on his AFL career, so he’s a bit shocked to be on the verge of joining the 200-game club.

Pearce will reach the special milestone when he lines up in Sunday’s clash with Brisbane at the Gabba.

The 28-year-old started his career with a bang, winning the Rising Star award with Port Adelaide in 2006 after being drafted as a rookie a year earlier.

But after a few promising years at Port Adelaide, his career stalled – until he made the move to Fremantle via free agency at the end of 2012.

Pearce quickly rediscovered his mojo at the Dockers, playing an important role in the club’s surge into last year’s grand final.

The speedy midfielder hopes more success awaits Fremantle this year, and says he can’t quite believe how quickly his career has flown by.

“(I was) just a kid coming up from nothing, not expecting much when I first started,” Pearce said on Tuesday.

“And to be able to look back and say you’ve played 200 games, it’s an achievement in itself.

“It feels really quick. I’ve been fortunate not to have any major injuries.

“I’m honoured to be able to run for the milestone on the weekend.”

Aside from his debut in 2005, Pearce has never played less than 19 games in a season, with his durability a key asset for the sides he’s played in.

But his goalscoring accuracy remains a concern.

Pearce has booted 103.117 across his career, including a wayward return of 10.21 last year.

The nippy midfielder has booted a career-best 17.17 across 20 games this season, and Dockers fans are hoping Pearce will kick a few more during this year’s finals series.
