Dennis-Lane stars in Swans reserves’ final

Sydney small forward Trent Dennis-Lane booted five goals in Sunday’s NEAFL Eastern Conference grand final, his last chance to press for AFL selection ahead of Friday night’s preliminary final.

Sydney’s reserves suffered a 30-point defeat to Queanbeyan in the decider, played at Canberra’s Manuka Oval.

With the exception of suspended defender Heath Grundy returning for Ben McGlynn (hamstring), the Swans aren’t expected to make any changes for their AFL grand-final playoff against Collingwood at ANZ Stadium.

However, Dennis-Lane’s performance is timely if Swans coach John Longmire is questioning whether he wants more of a like-for-like replacement for McGlynn.

Dennis-Lane kicked the opening goal and was a constant threat until Queanbeyan took control of the game with a five-goal burst in the final quarter.

The 24-year-old played eight AFL games this season, but has been unable to force his way back into the seniors after being dropped in round 21.

Dennis-Lane’s most recent AFL match was against the Magpies on August 11, when he kicked one goal and laid seven tackles at ANZ Stadium.

The Swans, who enjoyed a weekend off after downing Adelaide in week one of the finals, will train at the Sydney Olympic Park venue on Monday.
