Demons sign new major sponsor

AFL club Melbourne have signed a new major sponsor, a week after being forced to dump their previous one over a racism controversy.

The Demons have signed a one-year agreement with internet travel website Webjet, who will be featured on the club’s playing guernseys, starting with Saturday’s clash with Richmond.

The Demons were last week forced to cut ties with major sponsor EnergyWatch, which was contributing $1.9 million per year to the club.

Melbourne dumped that company after becoming aware of a series of racist remarks published on Facebook by the energy broker’s co-founder and chief executive Ben Polis, who has since lost his job.

“The partnership with Webjet puts us back on track from a commercial perspective,” Demons chief executive Cameron Schwab said.

“We were faced with a challenging situation, but we would never compromise our integrity.”

While Webjet have signed on for just one season, the two parties have the option of a two-year extension.

Webjet managing director John Guscic said his company had approached Melbourne after being impressed with the integrity the club showed in cutting ties with EnergyWatch.

Guscic said Webjet made contact with the Demons on Tuesday and by Wednesday they had agreed to a deal.
