Demons sign Jones until end of 2019

Melbourne skipper Nathan Jones has signed a four-year extension with the Demons, keeping him at the AFL club until at least the end of the 2019 season.

The 26-year-old midfielder had been committed until the end of next year, but the Demons announced on Thursday he had extended his contract.

Jones conceded some “robust” discussions had secured his future with the Demons.

“My intention all along was to stay in the red and blue,” he said.

“I’ve been through a fair bit of ups and downs – a lot of downs in terms of team success.”

“But I really want to see it through.”

But staying a one-club player had always been a personal goal, he added.

Jones, who had previously served in the co-captain’s role, went on to become only the third Melbourne player to win three successive best and fairest awards.

He celebrated the re-signing via Instagram, posting a portrait with the caption: “DEMON FOR LIFE. I love this club, my teammates and the supporters. I’m more motivated, dedicated and driven than ever.”
