Collingwood AFLW captain Steph Chiocci was unfazed after her team registered the competition’s equal lowest ever score during their loss to Melbourne, and dismissed suggestions it would be a source of motivation next week against Fremantle.

The Magpies were restricted to a paltry 1.3 (9) at Victoria Park on Saturday but Chiocci said that if it meant her team won the game, she wouldn’t be fussed if they kicked an even lower score than that.

“If we win a game and kick 1.1 and they don’t kick anything and we win, I couldn’t care less what the score is,” she said after the Magpies’ 17 -point defeat.

However, the reality is Collingwood have started a season 0-2 for the third year running and with only five games left in the season, they need to improve their average of 16 points per game if they’re any hope of making the finals.

“We need to take opportunities and as long as we see some progression each week and keep improving that’s what we want to see,” said Collingwood coach Wayne Siekman.

“We’re a young team learning, the ladder is irrelevant to us … the results will take care of themselves.”

Siekman attributed the Magpies’ scoring struggles, which saw them wait until late in the final quarter to get their only goal and also be restricted to just two behinds in the first three quarters, to Melbourne’s dominance of the contested ball.

“They just won the contest all day and put us on the back foot which, as we saw, doesn’t quite help,” he said.

Melbourne coach Mick Stinear was rapt with the way his side responded so emphatically to last week’s narrow defeat to Fremantle.

“The girls were brilliant during the week and the key for us today was to be strong around the ball and our defensive game.”

Siekman confirmed Collingwood vice-captain Emma Grant would have scans on Monday after she left the ground in the first half with a shoulder injury.
