Dawson reported for striking against Cats

Fremantle key-position duo Zac Dawson and Chris Mayne are set to attract the attention of the AFL match review panel on Monday.

But Dockers coach Ross Lyon has been quick to defend the approach of his players in the wake of Saturday’s at-times fiery qualifying final win over Geelong.

Fullback Dawson was reported before the opening bounce of Saturday’s Simonds Stadium encounter for striking opponent James Podsiadly.

He also gave away a couple of free kicks, which Lyon described as “incredibly marginal”.

Mayne made contact with the stomach of opponent Steve Johnson during the second term of the match, sending the star Cat to the turf.

But Lyon said he also saw some of his players go down off the ball in the 15-point win.

“We need to lick our wounds and clearly there some things to be looked at,” Lyon said.

“That has been alluded to and we have got some sore boys that had plenty of whacks.

“There was plenty of on- and off-ball things that will probably be looked at I would suggest.

“But to allude it was (only) one team, I can’t let it go, because it is incredibly disappointing.”

Fremantle can ill afford to lose either Dawson or Mayne to suspension, with the club only one win away from a first-ever grand final berth.
