Crows wary of land of the Giants

Greater Western Sydney’s vaunted top draft pick Tom Boyd has been warned to expect a brutal AFL induction against the Adelaide Crows on Sunday.

Boyd will debut for the Giants in the Adelaide Oval fixture with a simple instruction from his coach Leon Cameron: enjoy it.

“I understand there’s a lot of pressure on high draft picks to perform first up but it’s a tough, brutal game,” Cameron said.

“All we want him to do is go out there, have some fun and enjoy his footy.

“I’m sure if he does that, the natural talent and work rate will take care of the rest.”

Boyd will form a three-pronged forward line boasting Jeremy Cameron and Jonathon Patton which has Crows coach Brenton Sanderson wary.

“That’s really scary,” Sanderson said of the Giants’ tall trio.

“I know those boys are all still very young – Boyd in his first season, Patton in his third and obviously Jeremy Cameron is already one of the best key position players in the competition.

“On paper, that looks like a real challenge for us.

“If they can hold that forward group together, it’s going to be the envy of every team in the competition.”

Sanderson said restricting supply to the Giants’ attackers would be vital for Adelaide, who logged a first win of the season last weekend against St Kilda.

“If they have time and space and we allow their midfielders to get efficient inside 50s, no-one’s going to be able to stop them,” he said.

While Boyd’s debut demands attention, at the other end of the spectrum is Adelaide midfielder Scott Thompson, who will play his 250th AFL match.

Sanderson said the Crows were hellbent on marking the dual club champion’s milestone with a win.

“We look to reward our milestone players with an extra effort,” he said.

“We certainly call upon our players to remind them that it’s a really special game for one of our champions.

“Scotty won’t be front and centre saying ‘do it for me’ – it will be more driven by his teammates … it’s important that we do play really well for him.”
