Crows triumph over Carlton in AFL cup

Adelaide key forward Taylor Walker inspired his side to a nine-point victory over Carlton in Sunday’s AFL pre-season match at AAMI Stadium.

Walker kicked a nine-point super goal and a regulation major as the Crows won 1.5.4 (43) to 0.5.4 (34).

The loss was Carlton’s second in a row after the Blues earlier suffered a six point defeat to Port Adelaide.

Walker’s contribution and solid ball gathering performances by Adelaide captain Nathan van Berlo and winger Brodie Smith highlighted the Crows’ initial outing in the pre-season cup competition.

Carlton’s elusive forward Jeff Garlett kicked two goals while experienced onballers Brock McLean and Marc Murphy both gathered a dozen disposals.

Garlett’s second major gave the Blues a three-point lead in the 11th minute of the last half.

But Walker responded for the Crows with an accurate 40m set shot, which followed his running super goal in the opening half.

Adelaide’s 29-year-old rookie Ian Callinan then sealed the triumph with a clever left foot snap.

In the earlier match, Port Adelaide pipped Carlton by six points, 0.6.10 (46) to 1.5.1 (40).

Veteran Kane Cornes (12 disposals, two goals) kicked a remarkable boundary line set shot to give Port the lead with about 90 seconds remaining.

And his 18-year-old teammate Chad Wingard then added another to cap a promising debut from the fresh draftee.

Carlton utility Heath Scotland was influential in gathering a dozen disposals while Andrew Collins kicked two goals.

Collins’ first major was controversial as Power players appealed, with justification, that the soccered ball was touched before it crossed the goal line.

But umpires inexplicably declined to review the decision with the video technology available for use in the pre-season competition.
