Crows set to lose Talia for AFL season

Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson says some of his players panicked in their sobering AFL qualifying final defeat to Sydney.

But he’s adamant the Crows are “not done with yet” despite Saturday’s 29-point loss.

Adelaide, who host a knockout semi-final on Friday night, will likely be without key defender Daniel Talia for the rest of the season.

Three days after winning the AFL’s Rising Star award for best young player, Talia sustained a suspected broken right arm against the Swans.

“Daniel Talia is a huge loss for us – it’s amazing in footy how you can go from those highs to the lows in a few days,” Sanderson said.

The first-year coach was critical of Adelaide’s composure as Sydney prevailed 11.5 (71) to 5.12 (42) at AAMI Stadium.

“It looked like we were just panicking with the footy too much,” Sanderson said.

“At times we just didn’t have that poise or composure to hit the free target – it’s almost like Sydney knew where we were going to kick it.

“In the big games, you need to make the most of your opportunities … sometimes the anxiety and the pressure can get to players a little bit.”

But Sanderson expected his players, particularly the nine who made their finals debut on Saturday, to learn quickly.

“Hopefully they don’t look upon the experience as a negative one,” Sanderson said.

“We lost a game of footy that we played poorly in – but there is another opportunity for us to make amends.

“We’re not done with yet, we have got plenty of fight left in us.”
