Crows rout Demons to ruin Green’s farewell

Adelaide secured their AFL finals double chance on Sunday when they belted Melbourne by 69 points at the MCG to ensure a top-four finish.

The Crows gained a valuable percentage boost ahead of round 23, kicking 10 goals in the third term to win the twilight match 22.18 (150) to 11.15 (81).

Adelaide forward Taylor Walker was best afield with 16 marks and four goals and captain Scott Thompson had 29 possessions.

Demons favourite Brad Green started well in his retirement match, kicking two first-quarter goals.

But he missed two easy shots in the second term and was unable to add to his scoring tally.

After the final whistle, Melbourne and Adelaide players formed a guard of honour for Green, who ran over to acknowledge the Demons fans before he was chaired from the field by co-captains Jack Trengove and Jack Grimes.

Adelaide kicked three of the first four goals but Melbourne hit back impressively and led by three points when Green kicked his second goal at 19 minutes.

The Crows goalled twice before quarter-time to take an 11-point lead.

A silly free kick on the wing by Joel Macdonald early in the second term cost the Demons as the Crows were able to set up Walker for his third goal.

Melbourne rallied with two goals, reducing the margin to five points, but then the Crows flexed their muscle.

They kicked the last four goals of the half to take a comfortable 31-point lead into the main break.

Eight of Adelaide’s first nine goals had come directly from Melbourne turnovers.

The Crows cakewalk became a rout in the third quarter when they had 16 inside 50s and kicked 10.4.

It is a club-record score for the third term, beating the 9.2 they kicked at home against St Kilda during the 2003 season.

The only question now for the Crows is where they will finish in the top four.

Even if Adelaide lose at home to Gold Coast next Saturday, their percentage will be good enough to keep them in the top four.

But a top-two finish, meaning a home qualifying final, is highly unlikely.

By contrast it was another bleak game for Melbourne, who only have four wins.

As always, midfielder Nathan Jones worked hard for his 25 possessions, Colin Sylvia had a game-high 34 touches and forward Jeremy Howe again gave the Demons fans something to cheer with some strong marking.

Green announced last week he would retire after this game rather than go to Perth for next Saturday night’s match against Fremantle.

The 31-year-old kicked 350 goals in 254 games for Melbourne and captained them last season.
