Crows nominate Ben Jarman in AFL draft

Adelaide have nominated Ben Jarman, the son of AFL legend Darren Jarman, as a father-son selection in this year’s draft but Hawthorn will not follow suit.

The promising small forward was eligible to be nominated by either team because his father played more than 100 games for both but the Hawks have elected not to utilise their rights.

“There are no guarantees for us or Ben. We will be true to our talent order and there is still plenty of work to be done between now and the national draft (on November 25),” Crows list manager Justin Reid said on Monday.

“We will see how the draft selections fall compared to our list of available talent. Ben has been finishing Year 12 so we have respected that and kept some distance but the nomination needed to be lodged today and we are pleased to have done that.”

Hawthorn’s decision not to pursue Jarman follows a busy trade period which left them with a record-low pick No.88 as their first draft selection.

“Due to the lateness of our picks in the 2016 national draft, which at this stage carry no points, we felt we could not commit to Ben,” Hawks list manager Graham Wright said.

“We have informed Ben, Darren and the Adelaide football club of our decision.

“We will still consider Ben like every other player when we have our selections in the national and rookie drafts.”

Elsewhere, West Coast nominated Jake Waterman – the son of two-time premiership player Chris Waterman – as a father-son pick.

He follows the lead of older brother Alec, who spent two seasons on West Coast’s list but struggled after contracting glandular fever and was delisted last month.
