Crows AFL defender Doughty to retire

Adelaide defender Michael Doughty will retire at the end of the AFL season.

The 33-year-old and the oldest player on the Crows’ list has played 226 games for the club since making his debut in 2000.

He informed teammates of his plans on Wednesday after stepping down from the club’s leadership group at the start of the year.

Doughty finished third in the Crows’ champion award in 2010 and was named best team man in 2008 and 2011.

Coach Brenton Sanderson said Doughty had been a great club man throughout his career.

“He is the typical back pocket who puts the team before the individual,” Sanderson said.

“His ability to mentor those who will eventually take his place in the side is testament to his character.”
