Fremantle tagger Ryan Crowley joked he may need extra security to survive the AFL grand final parade.

But his coach Ross Lyon doubts he’ll need the same to cope with Hawthorn’s attentions at the MCG on Saturday.

Crowley, the uber-tagger who has shut down Geelong’s Steve Johnson and Sydney’s Kieren Jack successfully in the Dockers’ run to the grand final, is likely to go to Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell from the first bounce.

Former Richmond and Western Bulldogs coach Terry Wallace said if he was coaching Hawthorn, he would hatch a plan to “go after” Crowley early in Saturday’s premiership decider.

But Lyon shrugged off any suggestion Crowley may leave the MCG in an ambulance – as one questioner bluntly put it on Friday.

“To hear (he’ll need) an ambulance and all the hype – grand finals are played in great spirit,” Lyon said.

“They’re fierce, they’re tough, the modern day players respect each other and it’s more hard and tough than it ever was.

“But there’s certainly not thuggery and grand finals are played in great spirit. I’d expect no different tomorrow.”

Crowley received plenty of boos during Friday’s grand final parade, and was joking before the parade set off through Melbourne’s CBD about the reception he might get – along with fellow boo-boy Hayden Ballantyne.

“I was joking around with Bals (Ballantyne) that we may need some cover over our vehicle if we were seated together,” Crowley said.

“I see there’s a few extra security following me around today which is quite humorous.

“But I get targeted every week. The good teams want to look after their good players. I expect a fair game. I’ll play fair, and we’ll see how it goes.”
