Cousins case expected to be fast-tracked

Former AFL star Ben Cousins has been bailed to reappear in the Perth Magistrates Court on June 27, where he is expected to be fast-tracked to the WA District Court.

Appearing in the Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, Cousins was accompanied by his father, former Perth and Geelong Australian Rules star Bryan Cousins, who sat through the proceedings.

Cousins was not required to plead to one charge of possessing with intent to sell or supply 4.5 grams of methamphetamine.

Cousins’ lawyer Michael Tudori requested bail conditions be changed.

Bail was set a $2000 with a similar surety, but he does not have to report to police as he was under previous bail conditions.

“The fact is, he’s not going to get a term in prison,” Mr Tudori said, in applying for changed bail conditions.

Mr Tudori said Cousins was just over the indictable offence limit of four grams.

Cousins left court about 15 minutes later with his lawyer and walked straight into a media scrum.

He remained silent as he walked with his lawyer down Hay Street followed by about 40 assembled journalists and cameramen.

As Cousins walked one fan asked for his autograph while another yelled from across the street: “You’re a bloody champion.”

Cousins’ father Bryan left separately.
