Star Greater Western Sydney midfielder Stephen Coniglio is set to miss the first month of the AFL season with an ankle injury.
The newly-appointed vice-captain suffered the syndesmosis injury in the Giants’ pre-season clash with North Melbourne on Friday.
He is expected to spend six weeks on the sidelines, including the next fortnight in a moon boot.
“We’re confident that with the right treatment he’ll be back on the field in a bit over a month,” the club’s head of athletic performance David Joyce said.
The West Australian was forced out of the Giants’ 38-point win over the Kangaroos during the third quarter with the high ankle complaint.
It was a difficult night for the club to end their pre-season, with question marks placed over several other players ahead of their round-one game against Adelaide on March 26.
Prolific forward Jeremy Cameron was reported for striking against North, defender Aidan Corr picked up a hand injury and veteran goalsneak Steve Johnson was concussed.
Corr will see a hand specialist on Monday to determine the extent of his injury, while Johnson will be monitored.
The 23-year-old Coniglio has been a key part of the GWS engine room since making his debut in the Giants’ inaugural year in 2012.
