Preview:

The third match of Finals Week 1 sees Collingwood play Port Adelaide, 7.45pm on Saturday at the MCG. This is the first elimination final of the weekend, and both teams will be desperate for a win. Collingwood have got the shortest odds all weekend, and should be able to take out what is a young and inexperienced Power side. The Magpies will also have the home ground advantage for this encounter, something that could prove crucial against a young side playing their first round of finals footy since 2007.

While Port have had some big wins this year against the likes of Sydney, West Coast, and Collingwood themselves in Round 14, the experience of the Magpies will be tough to overcome. Collingwood have won three of their last five matches, and this momentum together with a strong home ground advantage should get them though to the next stage.

Magpies hold no fear, says Port defender

Port have nothing to fear from Collingwood and their man mountain Travis Cloke in Saturday night’s AFL elimination final, defender Jackson Trengove says.

Trengove says Port plan to use team defence to stifle Cloke in the cut-throat MCG final.

“It’s a huge task, we think he is probably the best forward in the competition,” Trengove told reporters on Thursday.

“Just his pure strength, he’s a massive man.

“We’re going to have try and go in like we did last time against him: we worked as a back six and tried to control him and we did a reasonable job on him.”

Port restricted Cloke to 11 disposals, six marks and two goals when the Power beat Collingwood by 35 points in round 14 this year in Adelaide.

But Trengove was also mindful of the threat posed by Cloke’s likely attacking ally, Ben Reid.

“He has been a really good target for them, no doubt it’s a huge challenge for our backline,” he said.

“But as a defensive group and as a whole team, we’re going to focus on defending first and then our attacking game will come from that.”

Trengove is among an expected 95 per cent of Port’s team who are yet to play a final.

“It’s not anything that we’re really scared of,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to getting out there and having a red-hot crack at it.

“We have got nothing to lose. We have got a lot of experience to gain out of this final and hopefully following finals after that.

“A lot of people in the media and the general public just think it’s going to be a one-hit wonder – we will play one (finals) game and that will be it.

“But we think we’re capable, if we bring our best footy and four quarters of football, to match it with some really good sides.”
