Collingwood back in AFL’s top eight

Collingwood breathed new life into their AFL finals hopes with an upset win over Port Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday.

The Magpies won the round-19 clash 11.10 (76) to Port’s 10.10 (70) in front of 32,804 fans to leap back into the top eight with a 10-8 record, equal to ninth-placed Gold Coast’s but with a better percentage.

Coach Nathan Buckley’s Collingwood snapped a three-game losing streak.

Port (12-6) will stay in fifth spot, a game behind fourth-placed Fremantle, after suffering their fourth defeat in five matches and watching their chances of a top-four finish slip further away.

Big Travis Cloke booted three majors for the Magpies who were led in the midfield by Dayne Beams, Steele Sidebottom and skipper Scott Pendlebury.

Beams had a game-high 32 touches and a game-high 10 clearances.

Small forward Hamish Hartlett kicked four goals for Port.

Collingwood led 2.3 (15) to 1.0 (6) at quarter-time and the Magpies moved 21 points clear after scoring three of the first four goals of the second term.

Despite getting smashed in the clearances, Port managed to kick 4.7 to Collingwood’s 4.3 for the quarter to trail by five points at halftime, 6.6 (42) to 5.7 (37).

Both sides kicked three goals in the third term and Collingwood retained their five-point buffer at three-quarter time, 9.7 (61) to 8.8 (56).

Collingwood matched Port’s two-goal effort in the final term to hold on for a six-point win.

The Magpies’ fans farewelled their 2010 premiership skipper Nick Maxwell moments before Sunday’s game as the 31-year-old did a lap of honour in a car provided by a club sponsor. The 208-game veteran announced his retirement in July after suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
