Cloke’s focus on this AFL season: Buckley

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley insists in-demand AFL forward Travis Cloke’s full focus is on the success the Magpies want this year, not future riches on offer elsewhere.

With the All-Australian centre half-forward’s negotiations having stalled as rivals circle and Cloke’s form slumps, the club this week put talks on hold until after the season.

That prompted Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy to declare the Giants in the race for Cloke’s signature, ahead of his team’s clash with the Magpies on Saturday.

Fremantle have already made an offer of about $1 million per season over five years, with Melbourne and Carlton also among those interested.

Some Collingwood fans have taken to venting their anger towards the 25-year-old over the fence during matches and also through social media, as he weighs up rich offers while the goals slow to a trickle.

While Buckley was unwilling to speculate about Cloke’s future, he was satisfied he was pushing as hard as any Magpie for a premiership this year.

“Trav’s one of us,” Buckley told reporters on Friday.

“He’s one of our players that is absolutely focused on getting to playing his best football and giving ourselves the best chance of success in 2012.

“He’s one of us and all of us are focused on that.”

The first-year Magpies coach said the decision to suspend Cloke’s negotiations was all about narrowing their focus on trying to win the flag.

“Every decision we undertake is about that,” Buckley said.

Former Brisbane triple-premiership coach Leigh Matthews said the Magpies deserved the distraction Cloke’s contract wranglings were proving as they had put the Lions through the same thing in the past.

He said Collingwood complicated Brisbane’s efforts to retain star forward Jonathan Brown several times by offering $1 million per year.

“What goes around comes around,” Matthews told the AFL website.

“Whenever we were trying to sign Jonathan Brown in 2005 and 2008, Collingwood were the Fremantle of the time.”

Asked whether the halt in contract talks should boost Cloke’s form, Buckley said: “We’ll find out.”

But he said Cloke and fellow key forward Chris Dawes were not the only Magpies who needed to lift, with tall defenders Nathan Brown and Ben Reid also feeling that pressure.

“Those guys are looking forward to getting out tomorrow and making sure they’re tracking in the right direction,” Buckley said of the date with new side GWS.
