Clarkson returns as Hawthorn AFL coach

Alastair Clarkson has been given the all-clear by doctors to return to full-time coaching duties with Hawthorn, having missed five matches through illness.

The dual AFL premiership coach was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome at the end of May and temporarily stepped down, with Brendon Bolton leading the club to five wins in his absence.

Hawthorn CEO Stuart Fox said Clarkson had gradually been taking on more duties at the club in recent weeks.

“In line with medical advice, Alastair has been involved around the club over the past couple of weeks in a minor capacity while undertaking an active recovery,” Fox said on Monday.

“With endorsement from his doctors, Alastair will return to regular full-time coaching duties today.

“We’re really pleased Alastair is healthy and ready to return to work as the team embarks on the second half of the 2014 season.”

Clarkson’s first match back in charge will be against North Melbourne on Friday night.
