Clarke starting to feel at home at Magpies

Collingwood’s Irish utility Marty Clarke says he’s still feeling his way as he reignites his AFL career.

Clarke will mark his 50-game milestone in the clash with Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on Saturday after returning to Melbourne following a two-year break playing Gaelic football in his homeland.

The 24-year-old said he was starting to feel more comfortable in his second coming as an AFL player.

“Every week I’m learning a bit more and every training I’m asking more questions and starting to feel more comfortable again,” Clarke said on Friday before training.

Collingwood had another two stars – Dale Thomas and Heath Shaw – join the casualty ward this with hamstring injuries.

They now have seven first-choice players sidelined.

But Clarke said no-one, including him, was guaranteed a jersey.

“I don’t think I’m in a position to be saying I’ve cemented my position in this team at all, no way.

“Everyone needs to play their best and give their all, and I don’t think one player could say I’m guaranteed my place. That’s not the way it works.”

Clarke said the large injury toll had created a buzz at training with everyone who’s available to play putting their hand up.

“Everyone on the list knows they’re a chance now if they’re available and able to play, and it’s very exciting.”

The left-footer, who missed Collingwood’s 2010 flag, said it had been an adjustment getting used the different ball, game plan and intense media focus on the Magpies again.

Nathan Buckley has also replaced Mick Malthouse, who he described as a “father figure” during his first stint at Collingwood.

He said Buckley was involved in getting him back to the club.

“Nathan’s given me good confidence and he’s certainly someone I enjoy playing under,” Clarke said.

“I hope I can repay the faith Nathan’s showed in me.”
