Chris Scott declares Cats have a ‘problem’

A fuming Chris Scott has declared Geelong have a problem after a rare AFL defeat at GMHBA Stadium.

The Cats almost pulled off a miracle comeback from seven goals down in the third quarter against Carlton on Saturday night, but fell two points short.

Geelong kicked five of their 11 goals in the last quarter, but left their run too late and lost just their fifth game from the last 40 starts at Kardinia Park.

It led to the Cats coach giving his players the longest post-game meeting during his 10 seasons in charge.

“We won’t sit back and say ‘hopefully that was an aberration’, we’ve got to be a little bit harder on ourselves than that,” Scott said.

“I don’t often talk to the players post-game, but I did (tonight) and there were a lot of people talking, and there’s no clear answers except that we do have a problem.

“It’s clear and it’s been clear for a long time.”

Former St Kilda star Jack Steven made his club debut for Geelong after being brought into the team for fellow midfielder Brandan Parfitt.

He had a quiet night and picked up just seven possessions coming off a seriously complex lead-in.

The four-time Saints best-and-fairest winner was stabbed in the chest and went to hospital on May 17, but was cleared of any wrongdoing by the AFL.

“He’s (Steven) just endured the longest coach-player meeting, at least in my time at the club, so that’s a bit of a downer,” Scott said.

“But it’s still a good story. He’s a competitor and it was conservative not playing him round two so it made sense to bring him. He’ll get better.”
