Cats too classy for Power

Joel Selwood turned from tough midfielder into gun small forward on Saturday, booting a career-high four goals in Geelong’s 25-point win over AFL top-eight rivals Port Adelaide.

Port’s Angus Monfries also chalked up a personal milestone with his seven-goal haul.

The Cats were outscored six goals to one in the final term but claimed victory 20.9 (129) to 16.8 (104) in their round-20 clash at Simonds Stadium before a crowd of almost 25,000.

The victory kept Geelong in the frame for a top-two finish, improving their record to 15 victories from 19 matches.

Port, who started the round two games clear in eighth spot, have an 11-8 record.

The Power’s ex-Bomber Monfries was a standout in a losing side with six second-half goals to take his season tally to 34.

Ruckman Matthew Lobbe had 59 hitouts and was a strong contributor for Port who were overwhelmed by Geelong’s wave of running players as Joel Corey, Steve Johnson, defender Corey Enright and small forward Steven Motlop exerted plenty of influence on the contest.

Geelong led by 51 points at halftime and 56 at three-quarter time before extending their advantage to a 63-point buffer at the four-minute mark of the final term.

But Port fought back with six consecutive goals including three from Monfries.

Sharpshooter Monfries booted three of Port’s six goals in the third term but they were still outscored as the home side added another seven majors including a memorable left-foot snap by the human highlight reel Motlop after exchanging handballs with Joel Corey on the boundary.

Geelong onballer Mitch Duncan was subbed out of the game during the first quarter after he was knocked out in a heavy tackle on the wing.
