Cats to contest Johnson’s one-game ban

Geelong is set to contest Steve Johnson’s one-match suspension at the AFL Tribunal for kneeing North Melbourne’s Scott Thompson.

Johnson’s poor record means he will be risking a two-match ban if he fails to have the suspension overturned on Tuesday night.

If he accepted the ban, he would have missed the Cats’ crunch match with Fremantle.

Instead, he now also puts a clash with Carlton on the line.

Other players charged by the Match Review Panel from round 19 have accepted their sanctions, including Richmond’s Reece Conca, who has taken a two-match ban for lashing out at Giants youngster Devon Smith.

Carlton’s Nick Graham accepted a reprimand for engaging in rough conduct with Docker Ryan Crowley.

Western Bulldogs’ Tom Liberatore has accepted a $1950 sanction for making reckless contact with an umpire, while Essendon’s Dyson Heppell took a $900 fine for making negligent contact.

Richmond’s Bachar Houli and Giant Rhys Palmer both accepted $900 fines for wrestling each other, as did St Kilda’s Jack Newnes and Gold Coast’s Tom Lynch.

Saints David Armitage and Billy Longer as well as the Suns’ Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia have all conceded $1200 sanctions for engaging in a melee during the first quarter of their match.
